Every once in a while you find that you are your own client – and it’s not easy! We wanted the Binary Star Systems branding to convey technology, creativity and our ability to take businesses to the next level. Here you can see our process, applied to our own logo design and brand.
We started by thinking about the meaning of our business name:
Binary Star Systems: A binary system is a system of two objects in space (usually stars, but also brown dwarfs, planets, galaxies, or asteroids) which are so close that their gravitational interaction causes them to orbit about a common center of mass.
After knowing what the name meant we researched what a binary star looks like. Binary stars are basically two glowing spheres in space. One is usually larger than the other. If you look at our logo concepts below, you can see that we tried a few logo variations where we combined two stars. We didn’t want to get caught up in being literal so we also developed a few logo concepts with one star.
…………………………….. The Logo Concepts ……………………………..
The double starred designs did a great job of conveying our brand name in a literal sense, but in the end we chose a design with one star. The logo in our final branding did the best job at conveying technology and creativity with the use of a techno typeface and interesting manipulation of the star shape. The logo is on trend with the use of simplified shapes and Geo Wire styling (LogoLounge 2014 Trend Report).
As inspiration for the brand we looked at images from the Hubble telescope. The image Gas Pillars in the Eagle Nebula (M16) fit our business brand perfectly. It depicts a region of our galaxy where stars are coming to life. This concept was a great reference to our newly formed company as well as our ability to take businesses and help them grow through design, marketing and software development. In essence, Binary Star Systems is the Eagle Nebula and the businesses we are transforming are the newly formed stars.
The color palette for our brand was also derived from the Eagle Nebula photo. From the billowing clouds of newborn stars we chose a combination of onyx, greens (pine & glacier) and reds (vinca & venus). In color psychology the meaning of green is trustworthy, refreshing and soothing. Red is energetic, attention-grabbing and exciting. Black is classic, serious and powerful. The combination of these colors makes the Binary Star System brand trustworthy, powerful and exciting.
Here you can see how our research, inspiration and color palette combined to convey technology, creativity and our ability to take businesses to the next level in the final branding for Binary Star Systems:
